Southfield is a city located in Oakland County, Michigan, United States. It is a suburb of Detroit and is part of the Metro Detroit area. With a population of 73,156 as of the 2010 census, Southfield is the fourth-largest city in Oakland County.

History[edit | edit source]

Southfield was first settled in 1817 by John Daniels and became a township in 1830. It was named after its location, which was the "south fields" of Bloomfield Township. In 1958, Southfield was incorporated as a city.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Southfield is located at Script error: The module returned a nil value. It is supposed to return an export table.. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 26.28 square miles, of which 26.27 square miles is land and 0.01 square miles is water.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2010 census, there were 73,156 people, 30,018 households, and 18,178 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,783.6 per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 70.3% African American, 24.9% White, 0.2% Native American, 1.5% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 0.8% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.4% of the population.

Southfield is known for its business and commercial sectors. It is home to several Fortune 500 companies, including Lear Corporation, Denso, and Federal-Mogul. The city also has a thriving retail sector, with the Southfield Town Center being a major shopping destination.

Education[edit | edit source]

Southfield is served by the Southfield Public Schools district, which operates several elementary, middle, and high schools in the city. The city is also home to several private schools and higher education institutions, including Lawrence Technological University.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Southfield offers a variety of cultural and recreational opportunities. The city has several parks and recreational facilities, including the Southfield Sports Arena and the Beech Woods Recreation Center. Southfield also hosts various events and festivals throughout the year, such as the Southfield Summer Soulstice and the Southfield International Festival.
