Spanish Argentine

Spanish Argentine refers to Argentines of Spanish descent or those who have Spanish citizenship. Spanish Argentines are one of the largest immigrant groups in Argentina, and their cultural influence has significantly shaped the Argentine identity.

The history of Spanish Argentines dates back to the 16th century when Spain began its colonization of the Americas. The Spanish established the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, which included present-day Argentina, in 1776. The Spanish influence remained strong even after Argentina gained independence in 1816.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Spanish Argentines have contributed significantly to the development of Argentine culture. The Spanish language, Roman Catholic religion, and many traditions and customs have been integrated into Argentine society. Spanish cuisine has also influenced Argentine food, with dishes such as paella, chorizo, and empanadas being popular.

There have been several waves of Spanish immigration to Argentina. The first wave occurred during the colonial period, while the second wave took place in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The third wave happened after the Spanish Civil War and during the Francoist dictatorship. These immigrants have contributed to the diversity and richness of Argentine society.

Notable Spanish Argentines[edit | edit source]

There are many notable Spanish Argentines in various fields. In politics, Eva Perón, the wife of President Juan Perón, was of Spanish descent. In literature, Jorge Luis Borges, one of the most important writers of the 20th century, had Spanish ancestry. In sports, Lionel Messi, considered one of the greatest footballers of all time, is of Italian and Spanish descent.
