Sparx (video game)
A serious game designed to help young people with depression
SPARX is a serious game developed to provide cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to young people experiencing symptoms of depression. The game was created by a team of researchers at the University of Auckland in New Zealand and is designed to be an engaging and interactive way to deliver therapy to adolescents who may not have access to traditional mental health services.
Gameplay[edit | edit source]
SPARX is a role-playing video game that takes place in a fantasy world. Players create an avatar and embark on a journey through seven different provinces, each representing a different aspect of CBT. The game is designed to teach players skills such as problem-solving, relaxation, and recognizing and challenging negative thoughts.
The game begins with the player meeting a guide who explains the world of SPARX and the challenges ahead. Each province presents a series of challenges and puzzles that the player must solve using CBT techniques. As players progress, they learn to apply these skills to real-life situations, helping them manage their depression symptoms.
Development[edit | edit source]
The development of SPARX was led by a team of psychologists, game developers, and researchers at the University of Auckland. The project was funded by the New Zealand Ministry of Health and aimed to address the growing need for accessible mental health resources for young people.
The game was tested in a randomized controlled trial, which demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing symptoms of depression in adolescents. The results showed that SPARX was as effective as traditional face-to-face therapy, making it a valuable tool for reaching young people who might not otherwise seek help.
Impact[edit | edit source]
SPARX has been recognized internationally as an innovative approach to mental health care. It has won several awards, including the UN World Summit Award for e-Health and Environment. The game has been adapted for use in other countries and languages, broadening its reach and impact.
The success of SPARX has inspired further research into the use of serious games for mental health treatment, leading to the development of similar interventions for other mental health conditions.
