Special Actions Detachment (DAE) is a special forces unit of the Portuguese Army. It is part of the Portuguese Rapid Reaction Brigade and is tasked with conducting high-risk operations, including counter-terrorism, direct action, and special reconnaissance.

History[edit | edit source]

The Special Actions Detachment was established in 1985 to address the need for a specialized unit capable of handling complex and high-risk missions. Since its inception, the DAE has participated in numerous national and international operations, often collaborating with other special forces units from NATO member countries.

Organization[edit | edit source]

The DAE is structured to operate in small, highly trained teams. Each team is capable of performing a wide range of missions, from counter-terrorism to hostage rescue and unconventional warfare. The unit is known for its rigorous selection process and extensive training program, which includes advanced marksmanship, demolition, and close-quarters combat.

Training[edit | edit source]

The training regimen for the Special Actions Detachment is one of the most demanding in the Portuguese Armed Forces. Candidates undergo a selection process that tests their physical and mental endurance. Successful candidates then enter a training phase that includes:

  • Advanced marksmanship
  • Demolition and explosives handling
  • Close-quarters combat
  • Parachuting and airborne operations
  • Amphibious operations
  • Survival, evasion, resistance, and escape (SERE)

Operations[edit | edit source]

The DAE has been involved in various operations both within Portugal and abroad. These operations often require a high level of secrecy and precision. Some of the notable missions include:

  • Counter-terrorism operations
  • Hostage rescue missions
  • Direct action raids
  • Special reconnaissance

Equipment[edit | edit source]

The Special Actions Detachment is equipped with a wide range of specialized weapons and equipment to carry out its missions. This includes:

  • Assault rifles
  • Sniper rifles
  • Submachine guns
  • Explosives and demolition tools
  • Night vision and thermal imaging devices
