Steenbras

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Steenbras is a common name for two species of fish from the Pomadasys genus, specifically the Pomadasys commersonnii (White Steenbras) and Pomadasys olivaceus (Black Steenbras). These species are native to the Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean, particularly along the coast of South Africa.

Description[edit | edit source]

The Steenbras are large, robust fish with a silver-grey body and a distinct hump on the head. The White Steenbras can reach up to 120 cm in length and weigh up to 25 kg, while the Black Steenbras is slightly smaller, reaching up to 75 cm in length and weighing up to 7 kg. Both species have a set of strong, sharp teeth that they use to feed on a variety of prey, including crustaceans, mollusks, and small fish.

Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]

The Steenbras species are found in a variety of habitats, from shallow inshore waters to depths of up to 100 meters. They are particularly common along the coast of South Africa, but their range extends northwards along the east coast of Africa and into the Indian Ocean. The White Steenbras is also found in the Atlantic Ocean, as far north as Angola.

Fishing[edit | edit source]

Steenbras are popular targets for recreational fishing in South Africa. They are prized for their size and fighting ability, as well as for their culinary value. However, overfishing has led to a decline in Steenbras populations, and there are now strict regulations in place to protect these species. These include size limits, bag limits, and closed seasons.

Culinary Use[edit | edit source]

In the culinary world, Steenbras is considered a delicacy. Its flesh is firm and white, with a mild, sweet flavor that is highly prized. It can be prepared in a variety of ways, including grilling, baking, and frying. In South Africa, it is often served with a side of chips or salad.

Conservation Status[edit | edit source]

Due to overfishing, both the White and Black Steenbras are currently listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Conservation measures, including fishing regulations and the establishment of Marine Protected Areas, are in place to help protect these species and their habitats.
