Stephen Hillenburg
Stephen McDannell Hillenburg (August 21, 1961 – November 26, 2018) was an American animator, writer, producer, and marine biologist best known as the creator of the Nickelodeon animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants. Born in Lawton, Oklahoma, Hillenburg developed an interest in the ocean as a child and started his professional career teaching marine biology at the Orange County Marine Institute in California. He later pursued a career in animation, studying at the California Institute of the Arts.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Stephen Hillenburg was born on August 21, 1961, in Lawton, Oklahoma, but grew up in Anaheim, California. From a young age, Hillenburg had a fascination with the ocean and its creatures, a passion that would heavily influence his later work. He graduated from Humboldt State University in 1984 with a degree in Natural Resource Planning and Interpretation, with an emphasis on marine resources.
Career[edit | edit source]
After college, Hillenburg taught marine biology at the Orange County Marine Institute (now known as the Ocean Institute) in the late 1980s. During this time, he wrote an educational comic book titled The Intertidal Zone to help teach his students about the animal life of tidal pools. This work would later inspire the creation of SpongeBob SquarePants.
In 1987, Hillenburg decided to pursue a career in animation and enrolled at the California Institute of the Arts to study Experimental Animation. After graduating in 1992, he joined Nickelodeon and worked on the series Rocko's Modern Life as a director and writer, where he met several future collaborators on SpongeBob SquarePants.
In 1999, SpongeBob SquarePants aired for the first time. The series became a massive success, appealing to children and adults alike, and has since become one of the longest-running American animated series.
Personal Life and Death[edit | edit source]
Hillenburg was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in March 2017. He publicly disclosed his diagnosis in March of the following year. Hillenburg died on November 26, 2018, at the age of 57.
