SpongeBob SquarePants is an American animated television series created by marine science educator and animator Stephen Hillenburg for Nickelodeon. The series chronicles the adventures and endeavors of the title character and his aquatic friends in the fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom. The series' popularity has made it a media franchise, and it is the highest rated series to ever air on Nickelodeon.

Concept and creation[edit | edit source]

The character of SpongeBob was created by Stephen Hillenburg, a former marine science teacher. Hillenburg initially conceived the show in 1984 during his teaching days. The main character was inspired by Hillenburg's fascination with the ocean and its many creatures. SpongeBob is a sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea, in the city of Bikini Bottom.

The series features many characters, including SpongeBob's best friend Patrick Star, a starfish who lives under a rock, and his grumpy neighbor, Squidward Tentacles, an octopus who works with SpongeBob at the Krusty Krab, a fast-food restaurant. Other characters include Mr. Krabs, the money-obsessed owner of the Krusty Krab, and Sandy Cheeks, a squirrel from Texas who lives in an air-filled dome and wears a diving suit to breathe underwater.

As of 2021, SpongeBob SquarePants has aired over 250 episodes, including specials and motion picture releases. Each episode is typically divided into two separate segments. The series has been praised for its appeal to different age groups, and the show has won numerous awards throughout its run.

SpongeBob SquarePants has a significant cultural impact. The series has a broad fan base and has been referenced in various media. It has also spawned a successful franchise including two theatrical films, merchandise, and a Broadway musical.
