- Sterile talc powder (Sclerosol Intrapleural Aerosol; Sterile Talc Powder; Steritalc) is used to prevent pleural effusions (an abnormal collection of fluid in the space between the lungs and the chest wall).
- Sterile talc powder is inserted into the space, causing it to close up, so fluid cannot collect there.

- Talc is in a class of medications called sclerosing agents.
- It works by irritating the lining of the chest cavity so that the cavity closes and there is no space for fluid.

How should this medicine be used?[edit | edit source]
Recommended dosage:
- The recommended dose is 5 g, dissolved in 50 ml to 100 ml 0.9% Sodium Chloride Injection, USP , administered intrapleurally.
Administration:
- Talc comes as a powder to be mixed with liquid and placed in the chest cavity through a chest tube, and as an aerosol to be sprayed through a tube into the chest cavity during surgery.
- Talc is given by a doctor in a hospital.
- After your doctor places talc in your chest cavity, you may be asked to change positions every 20-30 minutes for several hours to allow the talc to spread through your chest cavity.

The most common side effects of this medicine include:
- fever
- pain
- bleeding in the area where the chest tube was inserted
Some side effects can be serious which may include:
- fever
- shortness of breath
- coughing up blood
- fast heartbeat
- chest pain or pressure
- dizziness
- fainting
What special precautions should I follow?[edit | edit source]
- Acute Pneumonitis and ARDS, including fatal cases, occur with intrapleural talc administration.
- Sclerosis of the pleural space may preclude or complicate subsequent ipsilateral surgery and diagnostic procedures. Consider the possible effects of the use of Sterile Talc Powder on future diagnostic and therapeutic procedures prior to administration.
- Advise patients to notify their healthcare provider if new or worsening pulmonary symptoms develop.
