Steve Novick (born February 8, 1963) is an American politician and lawyer who served as a Portland City Commissioner from 2013 to 2016. He is a member of the Democratic Party.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Novick was born in Newark, New Jersey. He was born with significant physical disabilities, including a missing left hand and fibular hemimelia, which resulted in the amputation of his legs at the knee. Despite these challenges, he excelled academically and graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He later earned a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School.

Legal career[edit | edit source]

After graduating from Harvard Law School, Novick worked as an attorney for the United States Department of Justice in the Environmental Enforcement Section. He later served as a senior attorney for the Oregon Department of Justice.

Political career[edit | edit source]

Novick first gained political attention in 2008 when he ran for the United States Senate seat in Oregon, ultimately losing in the Democratic primary to Jeff Merkley. Despite the loss, he remained active in politics and advocacy.

In 2012, Novick was elected to the Portland City Council, where he served as a City Commissioner from 2013 to 2016. During his tenure, he focused on issues such as transportation, environmental sustainability, and housing. He was known for his progressive policies and efforts to improve the city's infrastructure.

Novick is known for his wit and sense of humor, often using self-deprecating humor to address his physical disabilities. He is an advocate for disability rights and has been involved in various community organizations.
