Stjepan Betlheim
Stjepan Betlheim (1898–1970) was a prominent Croatian psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. He is considered one of the pioneers of psychoanalysis in Yugoslavia and made significant contributions to the field of mental health.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Stjepan Betlheim was born in Zagreb, which was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He pursued his medical studies at the University of Vienna, where he was introduced to the works of Sigmund Freud. After completing his studies, he returned to Zagreb and began his career in psychiatry.
Career[edit | edit source]
Betlheim worked at the Vrapče Psychiatric Hospital in Zagreb, where he implemented many of the psychoanalytic techniques he had learned in Vienna. He was instrumental in establishing psychoanalysis as a respected field within Croatian psychiatry. Betlheim also held a teaching position at the University of Zagreb, where he influenced a generation of Croatian psychiatrists and psychoanalysts.
Contributions to Psychoanalysis[edit | edit source]
Betlheim's work focused on the treatment of schizophrenia and other severe mental disorders. He published numerous articles and books on psychoanalysis, contributing to the understanding of mental health in the region. His efforts helped to integrate psychoanalytic concepts into mainstream psychiatric practice in Yugoslavia.
