Stretch receptors are sensory neurons that respond to the stretching of the muscle in which they are located. They are a type of mechanoreceptor that are primarily found in muscle spindles and baroreceptors.

Function[edit | edit source]

Stretch receptors are designed to monitor the length and tension of the muscle. They are activated when the muscle is stretched, and send signals to the central nervous system to indicate the degree of stretch. This information is used by the body to adjust the level of muscle contraction and maintain posture and balance.

In the cardiovascular system, stretch receptors located in the walls of the aorta and carotid arteries monitor blood pressure. These baroreceptors send signals to the brain to adjust heart rate and blood vessel diameter in response to changes in blood pressure.

Types[edit | edit source]

There are two main types of stretch receptors: muscle spindles and Golgi tendon organs.

Muscle Spindles[edit | edit source]

Muscle spindles are located within the muscle fibers and are sensitive to changes in muscle length. They are composed of intrafusal fibers, which are wrapped in a capsule and connected to sensory neurons. When the muscle is stretched, the intrafusal fibers are also stretched, activating the sensory neurons and sending a signal to the central nervous system.

Golgi Tendon Organs[edit | edit source]

Golgi tendon organs are located at the junction of the muscle and tendon and are sensitive to changes in muscle tension. They are composed of collagen fibers connected to sensory neurons. When the muscle contracts, the collagen fibers are compressed, activating the sensory neurons and sending a signal to the central nervous system.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Abnormal function of stretch receptors can lead to a variety of medical conditions. For example, damage to the stretch receptors in the muscles can lead to muscle weakness, muscle atrophy, and balance disorders. In the cardiovascular system, malfunction of the baroreceptors can lead to hypertension or hypotension.
