Subcostal plane

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Subcostal Plane[edit | edit source]

The subcostal plane is an important anatomical reference point used in medicine to locate structures within the human body. It is defined as a horizontal plane that passes through the inferior border of the 10th rib during quiet respiration. This plane is also known as the transtubercular plane, as it passes through the tubercles of the transverse processes of the lumbar vertebrae.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The subcostal plane is located approximately at the level of the L3-L4 intervertebral disc. It is used as a landmark to divide the abdomen into different regions for clinical and surgical purposes. The plane is parallel to the transpyloric plane, which passes through the L1 vertebra and the pylorus of the stomach.

In terms of surface anatomy, the subcostal plane can be palpated by locating the inferior border of the 10th rib along the midaxillary line. This plane is important for identifying structures such as the pancreas, kidneys, and the origin of the superior mesenteric artery.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

The subcostal plane is commonly used in clinical practice for various procedures and examinations. For example, during abdominal surgeries, the incision may be made along the subcostal plane to access the abdominal cavity. In addition, imaging studies such as CT scans and ultrasounds may use the subcostal plane as a reference point to locate internal organs.

Understanding the location of the subcostal plane is essential for healthcare professionals to accurately assess and diagnose conditions affecting the abdominal region. It provides a standardized reference point for communication and documentation in medical practice.
