Subcutis

Subcutis (also known as the hypodermis or subcutaneous tissue) is the deepest layer of the skin, lying beneath the dermis and above the fascia. It is primarily composed of adipose tissue, connective tissue, and blood vessels.

Structure[edit | edit source]

The subcutis is primarily composed of adipose tissue, which serves as an energy reserve and provides insulation and cushioning for the body. It also contains larger blood vessels and nerves than those found in the overlying dermis. The thickness of the subcutis varies throughout the body and between individuals, with a greater thickness associated with increased adipose tissue.

The subcutis serves several important functions in the body. Its primary function is to store fat, which serves as an energy reserve for the body. The adipose tissue in the subcutis also provides insulation, helping to regulate body temperature, and cushioning to protect the body from injury. The subcutis also contains blood vessels that supply the skin with nutrients and oxygen, and remove waste products.

The subcutis can be affected by a number of medical conditions, including cellulitis, abscesses, and lipomas. It is also the site of subcutaneous injections, a common method of drug administration.
