Suma (co-operative)
Suma (co-operative)[edit | edit source]
Suma is a workers' co-operative based in Elland, West Yorkshire, in the United Kingdom. It is the largest workers' co-operative in the United Kingdom and specializes in vegetarian, fair trade, organic, ethical and natural products.
History[edit | edit source]
Suma was established in 1977 by a group of friends who wanted to create a business that was ethically sound and environmentally friendly. The co-operative started as a small operation, but it has grown significantly over the years and now employs over 200 people.
Structure[edit | edit source]
As a workers' co-operative, Suma operates on the principle of equal pay and equal say. This means that all members of the co-operative have an equal say in the decision-making process and receive an equal share of the profits. The co-operative is owned and managed by its workers, who are all members of the co-operative.
Products[edit | edit source]
Suma offers a wide range of products, including food, household goods, and personal care products. All of the products sold by Suma are vegetarian, and many are also vegan, organic, and fair trade. The co-operative is committed to promoting ethical and sustainable practices in all aspects of its business.
Distribution[edit | edit source]
Suma distributes its products throughout the United Kingdom and internationally. The co-operative operates a fleet of vehicles for local deliveries, and also uses courier services for national and international deliveries. Suma's products are available in independent health food shops, supermarkets, and online.
Social and Environmental Impact[edit | edit source]
Suma is committed to reducing its environmental impact and promoting social justice. The co-operative uses renewable energy sources for its operations, and it also supports a number of local and international charities and community projects.
