Sunshine Hospital

Sunshine Hospital is a public hospital located in St Albans, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. It is operated by Western Health and is one of three major hospitals in the western suburbs of Melbourne. The hospital is named after the nearby suburb of Sunshine.

History

The first hospital in the Sunshine area was established in the 1920s and was called St Andrews. It had 14 beds and was located in Albion. In 1946, it was renamed Sunshine and District Community Hospital. In 1989, the old hospital was demolished and replaced by the new Sunshine Hospital on Furlong Road in St Albans. The hospital became part of the Western Health Care Network in 1996 and was later renamed Western Health. In 2015, an intensive care unit was opened at the hospital. In May 2019, the Joan Kirner Women's and Children's Hospital, a specialist facility, was opened on the Sunshine Hospital site.
