Survival skills
Survival skills are techniques a person may use in a dangerous situation (like natural disasters) to save themselves or others. These skills are meant to provide basic necessities for human life: water, food, and shelter. They also help people to signal for help, navigate safely, avoid unpleasant interactions with animals and plants, and for first aid. Survival skills are often associated with the need to survive in a disaster situation.
Basics of Survival[edit | edit source]
Survival skills include a range of situations from lost in the wilderness, to a disaster scenario like earthquakes or floods. The core survival skills are:
- Water Procurement: Finding and purifying water. Without water, a person can only survive for about three days.
- Food Procurement: Identifying edible plants and animals, and knowing how to hunt, fish, and forage for food.
- Shelter Building: Creating protection from the elements, using natural or man-made materials.
- Fire Making: Knowing how to start and maintain a fire for warmth, protection, and cooking.
- Navigation: Using the sun, stars, and natural landmarks to find one's way.
- First Aid: Providing medical care in emergencies, including how to treat injuries and prevent infection.
Importance of Survival Skills[edit | edit source]
Survival skills can be crucial for anyone who spends time outdoors, including hikers, campers, and adventurers. They are also vital for people living in areas prone to natural disasters. Knowing these skills can make the difference between life and death in extreme situations.
Training and Education[edit | edit source]
There are many ways to learn survival skills, from books and online resources to hands-on training courses. Organizations like the Boy Scouts and various survival schools offer courses on these essential skills.
Psychological Aspects[edit | edit source]
Survival situations can be extremely stressful and challenging mentally. Maintaining a positive attitude and using problem-solving skills are as important as the physical skills needed to survive.
Survival Kits[edit | edit source]
A survival kit is a package of basic tools and supplies prepared in advance as an aid to survival in an emergency. Common items include water, food rations, first aid supplies, a knife, a fire starter, and a flashlight.
