Sweet Baby Ray's is a brand of barbecue sauce that was established in 1985 in Chicago, Illinois. The brand is named after the nickname of one of its founders, David Raymond. Sweet Baby Ray's was founded by two brothers, David Raymond and Larry Raymond. The name "Sweet Baby Ray" was David's nickname. The brothers entered their sauce in a local barbecue competition in 1982, where it won second place out of nearly 700 entries. This success inspired them to start their own company, and Sweet Baby Ray's was officially established in 1985.
