Sylvia Trent-Adams is an American public health official and nurse who served as the Surgeon General of the United States from April 21, 2017, to September 5, 2017. She was the first nurse to serve as acting Surgeon General and the second nurse to serve as Deputy Surgeon General.

Sylvia Trent-Adams was born in Petersburg, Virginia. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Hampton University. She later received a Master of Science in Nursing and a PhD in Nursing from the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

Trent-Adams began her career as a nurse officer in the United States Army. She later joined the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) in 1992. Over her career, she has held various positions within the USPHS, focusing on public health policy and practice.

Surgeon General of the United States[edit | edit source]

On April 21, 2017, Trent-Adams was appointed as the acting Surgeon General of the United States by President Donald Trump, following the dismissal of Vivek Murthy. She served in this role until September 5, 2017, when Jerome Adams was confirmed as the new Surgeon General.
