Syndromes by Affected Organ
A syndrome is a group of symptoms that consistently occur together and are indicative of a particular disorder or disease. Syndromes can be categorized based on the organ or system they primarily affect. This article will focus on syndromes classified by the affected organ.
Cardiovascular Syndromes[edit | edit source]
Cardiovascular syndromes are disorders that primarily affect the heart and blood vessels. Examples include Coronary artery disease, which is characterized by damage or disease in the heart's major blood vessels, and Congestive heart failure, a chronic progressive condition that affects the pumping power of the heart muscles.
Respiratory Syndromes[edit | edit source]
Respiratory syndromes primarily affect the lungs and other parts of the respiratory system. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), for instance, is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that obstructs airflow from the lungs. Another example is Asthma, a condition in which a person's airways become inflamed, narrow and swell, producing extra mucus, which makes it difficult to breathe.
Digestive Syndromes[edit | edit source]
Digestive syndromes affect the gastrointestinal tract. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder that affects the large intestine and can cause cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and constipation. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter, the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach.
Neurological Syndromes[edit | edit source]
Neurological syndromes are disorders that affect the nervous system. Examples include Parkinson's disease, a neurodegenerative disorder that leads to progressive deterioration of motor function due to the loss of dopamine-producing brain cells, and Alzheimer's disease, a progressive disorder that causes brain cells to waste away and die, leading to a continuous decline in thinking, behavioral and social skills.
Endocrine Syndromes[edit | edit source]
Endocrine syndromes affect the endocrine system, the collection of glands that produce hormones. Diabetes mellitus, for example, is a group of diseases that result in too much sugar in the blood. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is another endocrine disorder, affecting women of reproductive age, characterized by prolonged or infrequent menstrual periods or excess male hormone levels.
