Empagliflozin/metformin is a combination medication used in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. It contains two active ingredients: empagliflozin and metformin, both of which work in different ways to control high blood sugar levels.

Composition[edit | edit source]

Empagliflozin/metformin is a combination of two oral antihyperglycemic drugs used in the management of type 2 diabetes: empagliflozin, a sodium glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, and metformin hydrochloride, a member of the biguanide class.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Empagliflozin works by blocking a protein in the kidneys called SGLT2. This protein normally reabsorbs glucose back into the blood. By blocking it, empagliflozin causes more glucose to be removed from the body in the urine. Metformin, on the other hand, works by decreasing glucose production in the liver and improving the body's response to insulin.

Indications[edit | edit source]

Empagliflozin/metformin is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus when treatment with both empagliflozin and metformin is appropriate.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of empagliflozin/metformin include urinary tract infections, changes in urination, and yeast infections in women. Serious side effects may include lactic acidosis, a serious and potentially fatal condition.

Precautions[edit | edit source]

Before starting treatment with empagliflozin/metformin, patients should inform their healthcare provider about all their medical conditions, including if they have kidney or liver problems, if they are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, or if they are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.

Interactions[edit | edit source]

Empagliflozin/metformin may interact with other medications, which can affect how it works or increase the risk for serious side effects. It's important to keep a list of all the products you use and share this information with your healthcare provider.

Dosage[edit | edit source]

The dosage of empagliflozin/metformin is based on the patient's medical condition, kidney function, and response to treatment. It's important to take this medication exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
