Szeged

Szeged is the third largest city in Hungary, located in the southern part of the country. It is the administrative center of Csongrád-Csanád County and the regional center of the Southern Great Plain region.

Szeged has a rich history dating back to the Stone Age. The city was later inhabited by the Celts and the Romans. In the Middle Ages, Szeged became an important center of trade and culture. The city was heavily damaged during the Ottoman Wars, but it was rebuilt in the 18th century and became a major hub of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Szeged is located on the banks of the River Tisza, one of the main rivers in Central Europe. The city has a flat landscape, typical of the Great Hungarian Plain. The climate is continental, with hot summers and cold winters.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Szeged is an important economic center in Hungary. The city is home to several large companies, including Pick Szeged, a famous Hungarian food company known for its salami. Szeged is also a center for education and research, with the University of Szeged being one of the most prestigious universities in Hungary.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Szeged is known for its vibrant cultural life. The city hosts several festivals throughout the year, including the Szeged Open Air Festival, one of the largest outdoor theatre festivals in Europe. Szeged is also famous for its culinary traditions, especially the Szeged fish soup, a spicy fish soup made with paprika.
