A tablecloth is a cloth used to cover a table. Some are mainly ornamental coverings, which may also help protect the table from scratches and stains. Other tablecloths are designed to be spread on a dining table before laying out tableware and food.

History

Tablecloths have a long history with varying degrees of importance among different cultures and times. The earliest tablecloths were made of felt and were used not for their aesthetic appeal, but for their practical benefits. As societies developed, so did the tablecloth. With the invention of weaving and dyeing, tablecloths became a form of art and a vehicle for displaying wealth.

Types of Tablecloths

Tablecloths are made from a wide variety of materials, including cotton, linen, silk and various synthetic fabrics. Cotton, linen, and silk are typically more expensive than synthetic alternatives, and linen and silk are more delicate.

Tablecloths require regular care to maintain their appearance. The care process often depends on the type of material from which the tablecloth is made. Most cloth tablecloths can be washed in a washing machine, but others may require more specific care.
