Tambocor

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Tambocor is a brand name for the drug Flecainide, a class 1C antiarrhythmic agent. It is used in the treatment of a variety of cardiac arrhythmias, including paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, and supraventricular tachycardia.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Flecainide, the active ingredient in Tambocor, works by inhibiting the rapid influx of sodium ions into cardiac muscle cells, thereby slowing the rate of depolarization and reducing the excitability of the heart muscle. This results in a decrease in the frequency and severity of abnormal heart rhythms.

Indications[edit | edit source]

Tambocor is indicated for the treatment of severe symptomatic life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias, such as sustained ventricular tachycardia, that have not responded to other antiarrhythmic agents or non-pharmacologic interventions. It is also used in the management of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of Tambocor include dizziness, visual disturbances, and gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. More serious side effects can include cardiogenic shock, heart failure, and ventricular arrhythmias.

Contraindications[edit | edit source]

Tambocor is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to flecainide or any of the other ingredients in the medication. It is also contraindicated in patients with certain types of heart disease, including heart failure and myocardial infarction.

Interactions[edit | edit source]

Tambocor can interact with a number of other medications, including other antiarrhythmic agents, beta blockers, and certain antidepressants. These interactions can increase the risk of side effects and reduce the effectiveness of the medication.
