Tantalum(V) fluoride
Tantalum(V) fluoride, also known as tantalum pentafluoride, is a chemical compound with the formula TaF₅. It is a white, crystalline solid that is highly reactive and used primarily in the production of tantalum metal and in various chemical processes.
Structure and Properties[edit | edit source]
Tantalum(V) fluoride is composed of tantalum and fluorine atoms, with tantalum in the +5 oxidation state. The compound forms a polymeric structure in the solid state, where each tantalum atom is surrounded by six fluorine atoms in an octahedral geometry. This polymeric nature is due to the bridging of fluorine atoms between tantalum centers, which is a common feature in metal fluorides.
In its gaseous form, tantalum(V) fluoride exists as a monomeric species with a trigonal bipyramidal structure. The compound is highly hygroscopic, meaning it readily absorbs moisture from the air, and it reacts vigorously with water to form tantalum pentoxide and hydrofluoric acid.

Tantalum(V) fluoride can be synthesized by the direct fluorination of tantalum metal or tantalum pentoxide. The reaction with elemental fluorine is typically carried out at elevated temperatures:

Tantalum(V) fluoride is used in the production of tantalum metal through the reduction of tantalum fluoride compounds. It is also employed as a catalyst in organic synthesis, particularly in reactions involving the formation of carbon-fluorine bonds. Additionally, tantalum(V) fluoride is used in the preparation of other tantalum compounds and in the electronics industry for the deposition of tantalum films.
Safety and Handling[edit | edit source]
Tantalum(V) fluoride is a highly corrosive substance and should be handled with care. It can cause severe burns upon contact with skin and is harmful if inhaled or ingested. Proper protective equipment, such as gloves and goggles, should be used when handling this compound. In case of contact with skin or eyes, the affected area should be rinsed immediately with plenty of water.
