Tapinella panuoides
Tapinella panuoides
Tapinella panuoides is a species of fungus in the family Tapinellaceae. It is commonly known as the velvet roll-rim or velvet-footed Pax. This species is characterized by its distinctive velvety cap and stem, making it easily recognizable in the wild.
Description[edit | edit source]
The cap of Tapinella panuoides is convex when young, becoming flat with age, and can reach up to 10 centimeters in diameter. It has a velvety texture and is typically reddish-brown in color. The gills underneath the cap are closely spaced and have a rusty brown color. The stem is also velvety and often tapers towards the base, giving it a distinctive appearance.
Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]
Tapinella panuoides is commonly found growing on decaying wood, particularly on hardwood trees such as oaks and beeches. It is widespread in temperate regions and can be found in forests and woodlands.
Edibility[edit | edit source]
While Tapinella panuoides is not considered toxic, it is generally not recommended for consumption due to its tough and leathery texture. It is not widely sought after for culinary purposes.
Similar Species[edit | edit source]
Tapinella panuoides is closely related to other species within the genus Tapinella, such as Tapinella atrotomentosa and Tapinella panuoides. These species share similar characteristics, but can be distinguished based on subtle differences in morphology.
Conservation[edit | edit source]
The conservation status of Tapinella panuoides is currently not well-documented. However, as a fungus that relies on decaying wood for its habitat, it may be susceptible to changes in forest management practices and habitat loss.
