Tavče gravče
Tavče gravče is a traditional Macedonian dish that is popular throughout the Balkans. It is a type of baked beans dish that is often considered the national dish of North Macedonia.
History[edit | edit source]
The origins of Tavče gravče can be traced back to the Ottoman period, when beans were a staple food in the Balkans. The dish has been a part of Macedonian cuisine for centuries and is a symbol of Macedonian cultural identity.
Preparation[edit | edit source]
Tavče gravče is made from fresh beans, onions, peppers, tomatoes, and various spices. The beans are soaked overnight, then boiled until soft. The onions, peppers, and tomatoes are sautéed in a pan, then mixed with the beans and spices. The mixture is then baked in a traditional earthenware pot known as a tavče, which gives the dish its name.
Serving[edit | edit source]
Tavče gravče is typically served hot and is often accompanied by bread, salad, and a glass of rakija. It is a common dish at Macedonian family gatherings and is also popular in restaurants and taverns throughout the country.
Cultural significance[edit | edit source]
In addition to its culinary importance, Tavče gravče also holds cultural significance in Macedonia. It is often prepared for special occasions and holidays, such as Easter and Christmas. The dish is also a common feature at traditional Macedonian weddings.
