Tea Garden Express is a passenger train service in India that operates between Mettupalayam, Coimbatore and Coonoor. The train is named after the numerous tea gardens that it passes through in the Nilgiri Hills.

History[edit | edit source]

The Tea Garden Express was introduced in the year 1908 by the British Raj to facilitate the transport of tea from the gardens in the Nilgiris to the markets in the plains. The train service was initially operated by the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a subsidiary of the Indian Railways.

Route[edit | edit source]

The Tea Garden Express starts its journey from Mettupalayam, a town located in the foothills of the Nilgiris. From there, it ascends the steep slopes of the hills, passing through numerous tea gardens and small hill stations such as Kallar, Hillgrove, and Runnymede. The train's final destination is Coonoor, a popular hill station known for its tea estates.

The Tea Garden Express is a narrow gauge train, which allows it to navigate the sharp curves and steep gradients of the Nilgiri Hills. The train consists of several passenger coaches and a luggage van. The coaches are equipped with large windows to provide passengers with panoramic views of the surrounding tea gardens and hills.
