Technical Diving International
Technical Diving International (TDI) is a scuba diving organization that specializes in the teaching of technical diving. TDI is considered one of the largest technical diving certification agencies in the world, offering courses and certifications for divers of all levels.
History[edit | edit source]
TDI was founded in 1994 by Bret Gilliam, Mitch Skaggs, and Lamar Hires. The organization was created in response to the growing demand for diving education beyond the recreational level. TDI's founders recognized the need for a separate entity to provide training for technical diving, which involves diving beyond the normal limits of recreational scuba diving.
Technical Diving[edit | edit source]
Technical diving is a form of scuba diving that exceeds the limits imposed on depth and immersion time set by recreational diving. Technical diving often involves the use of special gas mixtures (other than air) for breathing. The type of diving is referred to as "technical" because of the additional equipment and training required to conduct the dive safely.
Courses and Certifications[edit | edit source]
TDI offers a wide range of courses and certifications for technical diving. These include Nitrox Diver, Decompression Procedures Diver, Extended Range Diver, Trimix Diver, Advanced Trimix Diver, and many others. Each course is designed to equip divers with the necessary skills and knowledge to safely conduct technical dives.
Safety and Standards[edit | edit source]
TDI places a strong emphasis on safety and standards in all its courses. The organization has a comprehensive set of standards and procedures to ensure the safety of its divers. These standards cover all aspects of the dive, from equipment and gas mixtures to dive planning and emergency procedures.
Affiliations[edit | edit source]
TDI is affiliated with the Scuba Diving International (SDI) and the Emergency Response Diving International (ERDI). These organizations offer complementary courses and certifications for recreational diving and public safety diving respectively.
