Tedros
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus (born March 3, 1965) is an Ethiopian biologist, public health researcher, and official who has been serving as Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) since 2017. He is the first African in the role and the first director-general elected in a vote by all member states of the WHO. His tenure has been marked by controversy and criticism.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Tedros was born in Asmara, which was part of Ethiopia at the time but is now the capital of Eritrea. He studied biology at the University of Asmara, then went on to earn a Master of Science degree in Immunology of Infectious Diseases from the University of London. He later received a Doctorate of Philosophy in Community Health from the University of Nottingham.
Career[edit | edit source]
Tedros joined the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia in 1986, where he worked on malaria research and control. He later served as Minister of Health from 2005 to 2012, and as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2012 to 2016. During his time as health minister, he was praised for his efforts to reform the country's health system and improve its performance.
In 2017, Tedros was elected as Director-General of the WHO, becoming the first African to hold the position. His tenure has been marked by efforts to reform the organization and improve global health, but also by controversy and criticism, particularly in relation to the WHO's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Personal life[edit | edit source]
Tedros is married and has five children. He is known for his commitment to public health and his advocacy for universal health coverage.
