Tembleque

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Tembleque is a traditional pudding from Puerto Rico, made primarily from coconut milk. The name "tembleque" is derived from the Spanish word "temblar", which means "to tremble", reflecting the jiggly nature of the dessert.

Ingredients and Preparation[edit | edit source]

The main ingredients of Tembleque include coconut milk, sugar, cornstarch, salt, and cinnamon. The preparation involves combining the ingredients, except for the cinnamon, in a saucepan and cooking them over medium heat until the mixture thickens. The mixture is then poured into a mold or individual serving dishes and refrigerated until it sets. The dessert is typically garnished with a dusting of ground cinnamon before serving.

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

Tembleque is particularly popular during the Christmas season in Puerto Rico, but it is enjoyed year-round. It is often served at family gatherings and festive occasions. Despite its Puerto Rican origins, the dessert has gained popularity in other parts of the Caribbean and in the United States.

Variations[edit | edit source]

While the traditional Tembleque recipe is quite simple, there are many variations. Some recipes include additional flavors such as vanilla, lime zest, or rum. There are also vegan versions of the dessert, which are made without any animal products.
