Tenkasu

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Tenkasu[edit | edit source]

Tenkasu, also known as tempura crumbs or tempura flakes, is a popular Japanese condiment used to add texture and flavor to various dishes. It is made from the leftover bits of batter that fall off during the process of deep-frying tempura.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of tenkasu can be traced back to the Edo period in Japan. During this time, tempura was a popular dish among the working class, and tenkasu was created as a way to make use of the leftover batter scraps. These scraps were deep-fried until crispy and became a delicious addition to many dishes.

Production[edit | edit source]

To make tenkasu, a batter is prepared by mixing flour, water, and sometimes eggs or other ingredients. Various vegetables, seafood, or meat are then coated in the batter and deep-fried until golden brown. As the tempura is being fried, small bits of batter break off and float to the surface of the oil. These bits are carefully collected and strained to remove any excess oil, resulting in crispy tenkasu.

Culinary Uses[edit | edit source]

Tenkasu is a versatile ingredient that can be used in a variety of dishes to add a crunchy texture and savory flavor. It is commonly used as a topping for noodle soups such as ramen and udon. The addition of tenkasu enhances the overall taste and provides a satisfying crunch with every bite.

In addition to soups, tenkasu can also be sprinkled over rice bowls, salads, and even sushi rolls. Its crispy texture and subtle taste complement a wide range of ingredients, making it a popular choice among Japanese food enthusiasts.
