Tequila Herradura is a brand of tequila produced in Amatitán, Jalisco, Mexico. It is one of the oldest and most respected tequila brands, known for its high-quality production methods and rich history.

History[edit | edit source]

Tequila Herradura was founded in 1870 by Félix López. The brand's name, "Herradura," which means "horseshoe" in Spanish, was inspired by a horseshoe that López found on his property, which he considered a good luck symbol. The distillery, known as Hacienda San José del Refugio, has been producing tequila for over 150 years.

Production[edit | edit source]

Tequila Herradura is made from 100% blue agave, which is grown in the rich volcanic soil of Jalisco. The agave plants are harvested by skilled jimadores, who use a special tool called a coa to cut the leaves and extract the piñas (the heart of the agave plant). The piñas are then cooked in traditional clay ovens, which helps to convert the starches into fermentable sugars.

After cooking, the piñas are crushed to extract the juice, which is then fermented using natural yeast. The fermentation process takes place in open-air tanks, allowing the natural environment to influence the flavor of the tequila. The fermented juice is then distilled twice in copper pot stills to produce a high-quality tequila.

Varieties[edit | edit source]

Tequila Herradura offers several varieties of tequila, each with its own unique characteristics:

  • Herradura Silver: A clear, unaged tequila with a smooth, clean taste.
  • Herradura Reposado: Aged for 11 months in oak barrels, giving it a rich, amber color and a complex flavor profile.
  • Herradura Añejo: Aged for 25 months in oak barrels, resulting in a deep, golden color and a smooth, refined taste.
  • Herradura Ultra: A blend of añejo and extra añejo tequilas, filtered to remove the color and create a smooth, clear tequila.

Awards and Recognition[edit | edit source]

Tequila Herradura has received numerous awards and accolades for its quality and craftsmanship. It is widely regarded as one of the finest tequilas in the world and is a favorite among tequila enthusiasts and connoisseurs.

Cultural Impact[edit | edit source]

Tequila Herradura has played a significant role in the cultural heritage of Mexico. It is often associated with traditional Mexican celebrations and rituals, and its distinctive horseshoe logo is recognized worldwide.
