Teseo Tesei (1909–1941) was an Italian naval officer, known for his work in the development of human torpedoes. He is considered a hero of the Regia Marina (Royal Italian Navy) during World War II.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Tesei was born on August 3, 1909, in La Spezia, a city in the Liguria region of Italy. He joined the Regia Marina at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks due to his dedication and skill.

Career[edit | edit source]

Tesei is best known for his work on the development of the Maiale (Pig), a type of human torpedo used by the Italian navy during World War II. These underwater vehicles were used for covert operations, including the sinking of enemy ships. Tesei was instrumental in the design and testing of the Maiale, and he personally led several successful missions using the device.

In 1941, Tesei led a mission to attack the British naval base in Alexandria, Egypt. The mission was successful, but Tesei and his crewmate, Petty Officer Alcide Pedretti, were killed in the operation. Tesei was posthumously awarded the Gold Medal of Military Valor, Italy's highest military honor.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Tesei's contributions to the Regia Marina and his heroism during World War II have made him a revered figure in Italy. Several naval vessels have been named in his honor, including the submarine Teseo Tesei, launched in 2007.
