Tetramethylethylene
Tetramethylethylene (also known as divinyl, divinyl ethane, or buta-1,3-diene) is a hydrocarbon with the formula (CH3)2C=CH2. It is a colorless gas that is easily condensed to a liquid. It is important as a monomer in the production of synthetic rubber. When the compound is polymerized, it forms a rubbery solid material that is used in a variety of applications, such as in the manufacture of tires and other rubber goods.
Chemical properties[edit | edit source]
Tetramethylethylene is a hydrocarbon that consists of a chain of four carbon atoms, with two methyl groups attached to the middle two carbon atoms. The molecule is unsaturated, meaning it contains a double bond between two of the carbon atoms. This double bond is what allows the molecule to undergo polymerization, a process that links many individual molecules together to form a larger, more complex structure.
Uses[edit | edit source]
The primary use of tetramethylethylene is as a monomer in the production of synthetic rubber. The double bond in the molecule allows it to undergo polymerization, a process that links many individual molecules together to form a larger, more complex structure. The resulting material is a rubbery solid that is used in a variety of applications, such as in the manufacture of tires and other rubber goods.
Health effects[edit | edit source]
Exposure to tetramethylethylene can cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. It can also cause dizziness, headache, and in severe cases, unconsciousness. Long-term exposure can lead to more serious health effects, such as damage to the liver and kidneys.
Safety[edit | edit source]
Due to its flammability and potential health effects, tetramethylethylene should be handled with care. It should be stored in a cool, well-ventilated area away from sources of ignition. Personal protective equipment, such as gloves and safety glasses, should be worn when handling the substance.
