The Almshouses, Stratford-upon-Avon
The Almshouses, Stratford-upon-Avon are a historic set of buildings located in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England. These almshouses were established in the 15th century to provide housing for the poor and elderly residents of the town.
History[edit | edit source]
The almshouses were founded in the late 15th century by the Guild of the Holy Cross, a religious guild that played a significant role in the social and economic life of Stratford-upon-Avon. The guild was responsible for various charitable activities, including the establishment of these almshouses to support the less fortunate members of the community.
Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century, the almshouses came under the control of the Stratford-upon-Avon Corporation, which continued to manage and maintain the buildings for their original purpose.
Architecture[edit | edit source]
The almshouses are notable for their Tudor-style design, featuring timber framing and wattle and daub construction. The buildings have been well-preserved and retain many of their original architectural features, including the distinctive black and white timber framing and leaded windows.
Current Use[edit | edit source]
Today, the almshouses continue to serve their original purpose, providing housing for elderly residents of Stratford-upon-Avon. The buildings are managed by a local charitable trust, which ensures their upkeep and the welfare of the residents.
