The Hastings Center is an independent, nonpartisan, and nonprofit bioethics research institute founded in 1969. Located in Garrison, New York, it is one of the first institutions of its kind globally, dedicated to addressing ethical issues in health care, science, and technology. The Center's mission is to explore fundamental and emerging questions in health care, biotechnology, and the environment, influencing policy, practice, and public understanding.

The Hastings Center was established by Daniel Callahan and Willard Gaylin in 1969, in response to the complex ethical issues arising from advancements in medical and biological sciences. Initially named the Institute of Society, Ethics, and the Life Sciences, it aimed to foster dialogue and research on the ethical implications of novel medical practices and technologies.
