The Hindu is an English-language daily newspaper owned by The Hindu Group, headquartered in Chennai, India. It was started as a weekly in 1878 and became a daily in 1889. It is one of the Indian newspapers of record and the second most circulated English-language newspaper in India, after The Times of India.

The Hindu was founded in 1878 by a group of six like-minded journalists—N. Subba Rao Pantulu, G. Subramania Iyer, M. Veeraraghavachariar, T. T. Rangacharya, P. V. Rangacharya, and D. Kesava Rao Pant. The newspaper started as a weekly and became a daily in 1889 while the free India movement was gaining momentum.

The Hindu's independent editorial stand and its reliable and balanced presentation of the news have over the years, won for it the serious attention and regard of the people who matter in India and abroad.

Online presence[edit | edit source]

The Hindu was the first newspaper in India to have an online edition, started in 1995.

Criticism and controversies[edit | edit source]

The Hindu has been accused of left-leaning bias and being a mouthpiece for the Communist Party of India (Marxist). The newspaper has also been criticized for its coverage of the Bofors scandal and the 2G spectrum case.
