Thimphu is the capital and largest city of Bhutan. It is located in the western central part of Bhutan and is the political and economic center of the country. Thimphu is situated in the Thimphu District and lies in the Thimphu Valley, along the banks of the Wang Chuu River.

Thimphu became the capital of Bhutan in 1961, replacing Punakha. The city has since grown rapidly and has become the administrative and economic hub of the country. The Tashichho Dzong, a Buddhist monastery and fortress, serves as the seat of the Druk Desi (head of government) and houses the throne room and offices of the King of Bhutan.

Thimphu is located at an altitude of approximately 2,320 meters (7,656 feet) above sea level. The city is surrounded by mountains and is characterized by its hilly terrain. The Wang Chuu River flows through the city, providing a natural landscape that enhances its beauty.

Climate[edit | edit source]

Thimphu experiences a temperate climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and wet, while winters are cold and dry. The monsoon season, which lasts from June to September, brings heavy rainfall to the region.

Thimphu is the economic center of Bhutan, with a growing service sector that includes tourism, banking, and retail. The city is also home to several government offices and international organizations. The Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN) is the official currency used in Thimphu.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Thimphu is rich in cultural heritage and is home to several important cultural sites. The Tashichho Dzong is a major landmark, along with the National Memorial Chorten, which was built in memory of the third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. The city also hosts the annual Thimphu Tshechu, a religious festival featuring traditional dances and rituals.

Thimphu is home to several educational institutions, including the Royal University of Bhutan and the Royal Institute of Management. These institutions play a crucial role in the development of higher education in Bhutan.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Thimphu is connected to other parts of Bhutan by a network of roads. The Lateral Road is the main highway that connects Thimphu to other major cities like Paro and Punakha. The city does not have an airport; the nearest airport is Paro Airport, located about 54 kilometers away.

Thimphu has a diverse population that includes various ethnic groups such as the Ngalop, Sharchop, and Lhotshampa. The city has seen significant population growth in recent years, contributing to its urban development.
