Thomas Coram Foundation for Children, commonly known as Coram, is a charitable organization in the United Kingdom dedicated to supporting vulnerable children, young people, and their families. Coram's work encompasses adoption services, legal advocacy, education, and support programs aimed at helping children to have the best possible start in life. The foundation is one of the oldest children's charities in the world, having been established in the 18th century by philanthropist Thomas Coram.

History[edit | edit source]

The foundation was established in 1739 by Thomas Coram, a sea captain moved by the plight of abandoned children he saw on the streets of London. Coram campaigned for seventeen years to gain royal support for a foundling hospital, a refuge for these children. His efforts culminated in the granting of a Royal Charter by King George II, leading to the establishment of the Foundling Hospital, the first incarnation of what is now the Coram Foundation.

Throughout its history, the foundation has adapted its services to meet the changing needs of children and society. In the early years, it was primarily a children's home where abandoned infants were cared for. Over time, it evolved to focus on adoption services, children's rights, and welfare.

Services[edit | edit source]

Coram offers a wide range of services designed to support children and families:

  • Adoption: Coram is one of the largest voluntary adoption agencies in the UK, helping to find families for children in need of a permanent home.
  • Legal Advocacy: The Coram Children's Legal Centre provides legal advice and representation to children, young people, and their families.
  • Education: Coram Life Education delivers health and wellbeing education to children in schools, aiming to empower them to make positive life choices.
  • Support Programs: The organization runs various programs to support vulnerable children, including those in care, those needing mental health support, and young refugees.

Impact[edit | edit source]

Coram's work has had a significant impact on child welfare policy and practice in the UK. The foundation has been at the forefront of advocating for children's rights and welfare, influencing legislation and policy to improve the lives of children and young people.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The legacy of Thomas Coram and the foundation that bears his name is a testament to the enduring importance of compassion and advocacy for the most vulnerable members of society. The Foundling Museum, located on the original site of the Foundling Hospital, serves as a cultural and educational center that celebrates the foundation's history and its ongoing mission.
