Thomas Desmond Hawkins

Thomas Desmond Hawkins (1927–2020) was a prominent New Zealand cricketer who played for the Canterbury and Otago regional teams during the late 1940s and 1950s. Known for his right-handed batting and right-arm medium pace bowling, Hawkins made significant contributions to New Zealand domestic cricket during his career.

Thomas Desmond Hawkins was born on March 8, 1927, in Christchurch, New Zealand. From a young age, Hawkins showed a keen interest in cricket, playing the game at school and quickly advancing through local club cricket ranks in Christchurch.

Hawkins' domestic cricket career began with Canterbury in the 1945-1946 season. He was known for his versatility on the field, contributing both as a batsman and a bowler. Throughout his career, Hawkins played a total of 33 first-class matches, scoring over 1,000 runs and taking several important wickets.

In the 1949-1950 season, Hawkins transferred to Otago, where he continued to showcase his cricketing skills. One of his notable performances for Otago was a match-winning innings that highlighted his ability to perform under pressure.

Despite his domestic success, Hawkins never played for the New Zealand national team. His career coincided with a period when New Zealand cricket was blessed with many talented players, making competition for national selection extremely tough.
