Thomas Keller was born on October 14, 1955, in Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, California. He developed an interest in cooking at a young age while working at a Palm Beach restaurant managed by his mother. Keller moved to France in 1983, where he worked in several Michelin-starred restaurants, including Guy Savoy and Taillevent. These experiences significantly influenced his cooking style and philosophy.

In 1994, Keller opened The French Laundry in Yountville, California. The restaurant quickly gained international acclaim and has been awarded three Michelin stars every year since 2007. In 2004, Keller opened Per Se in New York City, which also received three Michelin stars.
Keller is the only American chef to have been awarded simultaneous three-star Michelin ratings for two different restaurants. He has also received numerous awards from the James Beard Foundation, including "Outstanding Chef" and "Outstanding Restaurateur".
