Thwaites Brewery
Thwaites Brewery is a regional brewery founded in 1807 by Daniel Thwaites in Blackburn, Lancashire, England. The brewery has a long history of producing a variety of beers and ales, and it remains a significant player in the British brewing industry.
History[edit | edit source]
Thwaites Brewery was established in 1807 by Daniel Thwaites, who took over the Eanam Brewery in Blackburn. The brewery quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality ales. In 1824, Daniel Thwaites expanded the brewery, and it continued to grow throughout the 19th century.
In 1878, the brewery was incorporated as Daniel Thwaites & Co Ltd. The company continued to expand its operations, acquiring several other breweries and public houses in the region. By the early 20th century, Thwaites had become one of the largest breweries in the North West of England.
Products[edit | edit source]
Thwaites Brewery produces a range of beers, including traditional ales, bitters, and modern craft beers. Some of their well-known products include:
- Thwaites Original - A classic English bitter.
- Wainwright - A golden ale named after the famous fellwalker Alfred Wainwright.
- Lancaster Bomber - A premium bitter named in honor of the Avro Lancaster bomber aircraft.
Operations[edit | edit source]
In 2011, Thwaites Brewery announced plans to move its brewing operations from Blackburn to a new site in Mellor Brook, near Blackburn. The new brewery, known as the Crafty Dan Brewery, focuses on producing small-batch craft beers.
Thwaites also operates a chain of pubs and hotels across the UK, under the Thwaites Inns of Character brand. These establishments are known for their traditional charm and high-quality service.
Awards[edit | edit source]
Thwaites Brewery has received numerous awards for its beers over the years. Their products have been recognized at various beer festivals and competitions, including the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) awards.
