Timeline of cannabis law

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Timeline of Cannabis Law is a historical overview of the laws and regulations pertaining to cannabis, a psychoactive drug derived from the Cannabis plant. The timeline spans from ancient times, when cannabis was used for spiritual and medicinal purposes, to the present day, where it is subject to a complex web of international, national, and local laws.

Ancient Times[edit | edit source]

The use of cannabis dates back to ancient times. In many cultures, it was used for its medicinal properties and as part of religious ceremonies. For example, in ancient China, cannabis was used as a medicine as early as 2737 BC.

Early Modern Period[edit | edit source]

During the early modern period, cannabis was introduced to the New World by European explorers. It was grown as a cash crop alongside tobacco and was used for its fiber, known as hemp.

20th Century[edit | edit source]

The 20th century saw a significant shift in the legal status of cannabis. In the United States, the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 effectively made possession or transfer of cannabis illegal throughout the country, except for medical and industrial uses.

21st Century[edit | edit source]

In the 21st century, there has been a trend towards the liberalization of cannabis laws. Many countries and states have decriminalized or legalized the possession of small amounts of cannabis. Some jurisdictions have also legalized the medical use of cannabis, and a few have legalized recreational use.
