Timeline of Cannabis Law is a historical overview of the laws and regulations pertaining to cannabis, a psychoactive drug derived from the Cannabis plant. Ancient Times

The use of cannabis dates back to ancient times. In many cultures, it was used for its medicinal properties and as part of religious ceremonies. For example, in ancient China, cannabis was used as a medicine as early as 2737 BC.

Early Modern Period

During the early modern period, cannabis was introduced to the New World by European explorers. It was grown as a cash crop alongside tobacco and was used for its fiber, known as hemp.

20th Century

The 20th century saw a significant shift in the legal status of cannabis. In the United States, the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 effectively made possession or transfer of cannabis illegal throughout the country, except for medical and industrial uses.
