Tingvoll

Tingvoll is a municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It is part of the Nordmøre region. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Tingvollvågen. Other villages in the municipality include Meisingset, Torjulvågen, and Kvisvik.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Tingvoll is located on the Tingvollfjorden and Freifjorden. The municipality is surrounded by the municipalities of Aure to the northeast, Halsa to the east, Gjemnes to the south, and Sunndal and Surnadal to the west. The Freifjorden and Tingvollfjorden surround the municipality on the north and east sides, respectively.

The municipality of Tingvoll was established on 1 January 1838. The northern district of the municipality (population: 1,472) was separated in 1874 to form the new municipality of Frei. This left Tingvoll with 2,216 residents.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Tingvoll is largely based on agriculture and forestry, with some manufacturing and service industries. The municipality is known for its organic and sustainable farming practices.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Tingvoll is known for its rich cultural heritage, including the Tingvoll Church, a medieval wooden church dating back to the 12th century. The municipality also hosts several cultural and music festivals throughout the year.

Notable people[edit | edit source]

Notable people from Tingvoll include the poet Hans Hyldbakk and the politician Johanne Gaup.
