Tokyo Tokyo is the capital city of Japan and one of the 47 prefectures of the country. It is the most populous metropolitan area in the world, boasting a rich history, vibrant culture, and a thriving economy.

Tokyo, originally known as Edo, was a small fishing village when it was first established in the 15th century. It became the political center of the country in 1603 when Tokugawa Ieyasu established his feudal government there. In 1868, the city was renamed Tokyo, meaning "Eastern Capital", when the Meiji Restoration moved the emperor's residence from Kyoto to Tokyo.
