Tom Clancy's The Division
Tom Clancy's The Division is an online-only action role-playing video game developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft. It was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on March 8, 2016. The game is set in a near-future New York City in the aftermath of a smallpox pandemic; the player, who is an agent of the Strategic Homeland Division, commonly referred to as simply "The Division," is tasked with helping the group rebuild its operations in Manhattan, investigate the nature of the outbreak, and combat criminal activity in its wake.
Gameplay[edit | edit source]
The Division is an open world game with elements of third-person shooter and role-playing games. Players can carry three weapons, and explosives like sticky bombs and smart mines to fight against enemies. The game is structured with elements of massively multiplayer online games, as players can interact with each other in the game's open world, engage in player versus environment (PvE) and player versus player (PvP) combat.
Plot[edit | edit source]
The game begins with a viral pandemic spread on Black Friday through banknotes, causing widespread chaos and the collapse of the United States government. The player is part of the second wave of agents activated by the Strategic Homeland Division, a classified unit of self-supported tactical agents trained to operate independently of command when all else fails. The player's mission is to restore order by investigating the source of the virus and combating criminal factions.
Development[edit | edit source]
The Division was developed by Massive Entertainment, a subsidiary of Ubisoft, with assistance from Red Storm Entertainment and Ubisoft Reflections. The game was built using the Snowdrop engine, which was specifically designed for the game to create a realistic and dynamic environment.
Reception[edit | edit source]
The Division received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise directed at its detailed environment design, cooperative multiplayer, and the depth of its gameplay mechanics. However, it also faced criticism for its lack of content at launch and technical issues.
Sequels and Spin-offs[edit | edit source]
A sequel, Tom Clancy's The Division 2, was released in March 2019. The game continues the story of the first game, this time set in Washington, D.C. Additionally, a spin-off game, Tom Clancy's The Division Heartland, is in development.
