Tom George was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He attended Michigan State University, where he earned his undergraduate degree. He later attended the University of Michigan Medical School, where he obtained his M.D. degree.

After completing his medical education, Tom George specialized in anesthesiology. He worked at several hospitals in Michigan, including Bronson Methodist Hospital and Borgess Medical Center. His medical career provided him with a strong foundation in healthcare, which influenced his later political career.

Tom George entered politics as a member of the Republican Party. He was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 1998, representing the 61st district. During his tenure, he focused on healthcare policy, education, and economic development.
