Toothfriendly International

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Toothfriendly International is a non-profit organization that promotes oral health. It is best known for its Toothfriendly label, a seal of approval for food and drink products that are scientifically proven to be non-cariogenic and non-erosive. The organization is based in Switzerland and operates globally.

History[edit | edit source]

Toothfriendly International was founded in 1989 in Basel, Switzerland. The organization was established by a group of dental professionals who were concerned about the increasing prevalence of dental caries (tooth decay) and dental erosion caused by the consumption of sugary foods and drinks.

Toothfriendly Label[edit | edit source]

The Toothfriendly label is a seal of approval that is awarded to food and drink products that have been scientifically tested and proven to be non-cariogenic (do not cause tooth decay) and non-erosive (do not cause tooth erosion). The label is recognized globally and is used by manufacturers in over 40 countries.

Testing and Certification[edit | edit source]

Products that apply for the Toothfriendly label undergo rigorous testing in accredited laboratories. The tests are based on the principles of plaque pH telemetry, a method that measures the acidity of dental plaque after consumption of the product. If the product does not cause a significant drop in plaque pH, it is considered toothfriendly.

Partnerships[edit | edit source]

Toothfriendly International collaborates with various organizations to promote oral health. These include dental associations, health ministries, and educational institutions. The organization also works with food and drink manufacturers to develop and promote toothfriendly products.
