ThermoSensor is a device used to measure temperature or temperature gradient. It consists of two different types of metals, joined together at one end. When the junction of the two metals is heated or cooled, a voltage is created that can be correlated back to the temperature.

Overview[edit | edit source]

A ThermoSensor is a type of thermometer that uses the principle of thermocouples to measure temperature. Thermocouples are a widely used type of temperature sensor for measurement and control, and can also be used to convert a temperature gradient into electricity.

Function[edit | edit source]

The ThermoSensor works by the Seebeck effect, a phenomenon in which a temperature difference between two dissimilar electrical conductors or semiconductors produces a voltage difference between the two substances.

Types of ThermoSensors[edit | edit source]

There are several types of ThermoSensors, including:

  • Thermocouple: This is the most common type of ThermoSensor. It consists of two different types of metals, joined together at one end. When the junction of the two metals is heated or cooled, a voltage is created that can be correlated back to the temperature.
  • Resistance temperature detector (RTD): This type of ThermoSensor uses a piece of pure metal, typically platinum. The resistance of the metal increases with temperature, and this can be used to determine the temperature.
  • Thermistor: This is a type of resistor whose resistance is dependent on temperature. Thermistors are made from semiconductor materials.

Applications[edit | edit source]

ThermoSensors are used in a wide variety of applications, including:

  • Industrial applications: These include temperature monitoring in boilers and refrigeration units, as well as in manufacturing processes such as plastic extrusion.
  • Scientific research: ThermoSensors are used in a wide range of scientific research applications, including climate change studies and materials research.
  • Medical applications: ThermoSensors are used in medical applications such as patient monitoring and blood bank refrigeration monitoring.
