Topoisomerase IV

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Topoisomerase IV is an enzyme that is part of the type II topoisomerase family. It is essential for bacterial DNA replication and is a primary target for quinolone antibiotics.

Function[edit | edit source]

Topoisomerase IV is a type II topoisomerase that helps to manage DNA supercoiling. It is involved in the separation of replicated chromosomes in bacteria. The enzyme has two subunits, ParC and ParE, which form a heterotetramer.

Role in Antibiotic Resistance[edit | edit source]

Topoisomerase IV is a target for quinolone antibiotics. Mutations in the genes encoding the subunits of topoisomerase IV can lead to antibiotic resistance.
